Carlos Serres 2012 Rioja Gran Reserva
This is not the first time we have reviewed the wines of Carlos Serres, and for a good reason. Their wines offer classic Rioja flavors balanced with modern winemaking finesse. Tucked into a sidestreet in Haro, Carlos Serres produces wine from vineyards in the Rioja Alta sub-region. This Gran Reserve sees two years in older American and French oak. Tomato leaf and bay leaf on the nose, with undernotes of cedar and burnt vanilla. On the palate, mineral notes dominate, with cranberry and persimmon on the mid-palate. A campfire note enters into the finish with a bright finish of spice. I purchased this in Pennsvyania for $16, but you can expect to see this for upwards of $25 in other states.
